2021–2024
"Moin und Salam" is a project by photographer Julius Matuschik, developed in editorial collaboration with Dr. Raida Chbib, the managing director of the Academy for Islam in Science and Society at Goethe University Frankfurt. Through various chapters, the online reportage sheds light on past traces as well as the current presence of Islam and Muslim life in Germany. Numerous photographs and individual videos provide realistic insights into the lives of German Muslims, while selected episodes are explained in more detail through audio interviews with experts.
The website explores the subject in six chapters focussing on different areas. In addition to the first two retrospective chapters on the history and beginnings of an Islamic culture in Germany, three further chapters are dedicated to aspects such as "feeling at home", "everyday faith" and the social coexistence of Muslims and Germans. The sixth chapter is set up as an open call and collects uncommented photographic submissions from the community on new and individual perspectives on Muslim life in Germany.
Our goal was to give the platform a factual, modern appearance, apart from the common clichés and stereotypes of Islam and the Muslim community in Germany. In the logo, the two iconographic elements of the words "Moin" (I-dot) and "Salām" (A with macron) are emphasised to create a distinctive figurative mark.
In April 2024, the project was also published as a photo book by Kerber Verlag. We also developed the graphic concept for the book.
