Coal Culture is a research project by Brussels based photographer Nathalie Bertrams and the South African writer Tristen Taylor. The two journalists aim is to investigate worldwide expansion of coal mining and the associated motives and consequences in terms of cultural, economic and environmental matters.

Together we created a concept for a digital platform, gathering various Stories from different countries around the globe, that presents the protagonists, profiteers and victims of the expansion of the coal industry. The first Chapter, »Coal Town« takes place in Lephalale, South Africa, close to Tristen Taylors hometown Johannesburg. In order to meet the demands of the multi-complex topic, the page is designed as a longread, which is divided into a total of six subsections (power, redress, migration, corruption, game, carbon). The journalistic texts are interrupted by atmospheric film sequences, quotes and haunting image series.
